Yoga and Meditation Retreats
QUIETNESS; these events are 'retreats', rather than workshops, providing a precious opportunity to find one's quiet place within, detaching from the talkative modes of normal social life. Some days are held in silence.
FITNESS; the retreat programme is suitable for functionally fit people with some yogic experience. People who are a bit stiff or not yet adept can benefit if they understand that each of us is wending our way in a life-long yogic process.
PRANAYAMA; helps to qualify the mind for meditation, bringing our awareness into balance.
MEDITATION SESSIONS; Jo elucidates aspects of inspiring yoga philosophy which give rise to the practices. A formal sitting meditation posture is encouraged - but some people prefer to use a chair. The sitting periods are not longer than about half an hour, or are interspersed with walking meditation. Breath-watching is the basic practice, plus several other techniques such as visualisations and "Awareness" exercises.
NATURE; Dartmoor National Park - can show us ways out of the grip of ordinarily busy minds. As we encounter the deep essential stillness in trees, rocks, rivers, wild animals, our attention is guided into the essential stillness within ourselves.
WALKS; up on the Moor are suitable for people who can manage rough ground, (about two and a half hours, or longer depending on the weather). Some people prefer shorter strolls keeping to the lanes. Please bring outdoor clothing, wooly hat, stout footwear.
WATER-COLOUR PAINTING; is optional. Gouache, brushes and paper are provided - or you can bring your own.

Both retreats only up to 12 people. Hathayoga, strong - gentle, suitable for functionally fit people with some understanding of Yoga. Pranayama, meditation with lead-in teaching, optional water-colour painting.
